AG Shapiro Leads Opposition against Labor Department’s Attempt to Circumvent Civil Rights Protections for Workers

HARRISBURG — Attorney General Josh Shapiro today led a coalition of 17 attorneys general in opposing a new Department of Labor rule undermining Civil Rights Era protections that prevent federal contractors from discriminating against employees. Under the proposed rule, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) would expand existing exemptions to allow any federal contractor who claims to have a religious purpose to discriminate against current or prospective employees based on the religious or moral objections of the contractor. In a comment letter, the Attorneys General urge DOL to rescind the proposal and note, among other criticisms, that it is in direct conflict with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

AG Shapiro Files Brief to Protect Women’s Rights to Safe Abortion Services

HARRISBURG—Attorney General Josh Shapiro today filed an amicus brief in a coalition of 16 attorneys general supporting women’s access to safe reproductive health care. The coalition filed the brief in Whole Woman’s Health Alliance v. Hill, which is currently pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. The attorneys general argue that, by preventing Whole Woman’s Health Alliance (WWHA) from opening a medication abortion clinic in South Bend, Indiana, state officials are placing an undue burden on women’s ability to access reproductive health care services.

AG Shapiro Petitions to Defend the Rights of Ellwood City Hospital Workers

NEW CASTLE – Attorney General Josh Shapiro today filed a petition in Lawrence County to compel the owners of Ellwood City Medical Center to pay wages, unemployment taxes, and pension contributions due to approximately 150 hospital workers who have not been paid. The petition asks the court to hold the owners accountable for their promises and to obey the law by paying their employees and keeping the hospital open to provide crucial emergency medical services.
